Carol, my wife, and I are looking after her brother’s chickens this week.
It’s a simple job. Feeding, watering and collecting eggs . But it got a little rough today.
A hen was still busy adding her daily contribution to theĀ egg supply when I came along. She was none too happy with me, and I was none too happy with her for refusing to literally move her butt so I could get the eggs underneath her. I couldn’t even pry her off with a stick. She just kept her bottom planted and pecked at whatever got within range of her head.
Bah. I’ll get the eggs tomorrow.
If you really need more information on egg collection, and the dangers of leaving them in the nest overnight, here’s more detailed information.
At least we’ve got a good supply of fresh eggs for the next while.
UPDATE: Chicken duty is done.
The battle for the eggs did continue, but a bigger stick with a little more leverage resolved the dispute. Yes, the bird had to be pried off the nest, but that ain’t so bad, right?
